SMA Early Career Outstanding Service Award
“We create value for our members, organizations, and society through professional development, high-impact scholarship and teaching, engaging programs, and deliberate, socially responsible acts. We do this while maintaining a sense of community that involves nurturing members, building collaborations, enhancing life-long friendships, and making a difference with our activities.” — SMA’s Mission Statement
In keeping with SMA’s mission and tradition, the SMA Early Career Outstanding Service Award recognizes a junior faculty member who has given valuable time to help achieve the SMA mission. - Important service contributions to SMA, including, but not limited to, elected office (e.g., board member, treasurer, secretary), appointed position (e.g., track chairs, committees), and volunteer service (e.g., paper reviewers, session chairs, and discussants).
- Community service will also be considered in conjunction with the required SMA service.
- The nominee should be an assistant or associate professor or related non-tenure track rank.
- SMA membership in good standing.
Previous winners of this award are ineligible to compete.
Nomination and Award Process: Nominations are solicited from the SMA membership by the President of SMA. Self-nominations are accepted. Nominators are asked to send the nominee’s name and a CV with relevant information, along with a short note about why they think this person would make a great nominee. An additional letter of support from another SMA member is required. The nomination form on this page is the only way to submit a nomination. The award winner will be recognized at SMA’s annual conference and must attend the SMA annual meeting to receive the award.
Nomination packages should include the following in a single .pdf file with the award name abbreviation, followed by the nominee’s abbreviated first and middle name and last name (e.g., ECOSA-KP JONES.pdf):
- A nomination letter summarizing how the nominee meets the criteria for the award.

- Letter of support from another SMA member.
SMA Officers or a committee appointed by the SMA Officers will review the nominations and select a recipient. SMA reserves the right not to select a recipient if inadequate nominations are received.
The deadline to submit a nomination is August 15, 2024.
